The animals went in two by two is an arrangement of this traditional song in three parts with congregational participation. It was written for a special Sunday at our church – Bring your Cuddly Toy to Church Sunday – when everyone was invited to bring along their cuddly toys! The song is arranged in three parts – the melody with tenor and bass harmony parts and the intention is that the “congregation” is invited to join in the “hurrah”s and, in our case wave their cuddly toys at appropriate moments. In the end, this piece was not used for the service.

Lyrics:
The animals went in two by two,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The animals went in two by two,
Hurrah! (Hurrah!) Hurrah!
The animals went in two by two,
The elephant and the kangaroo
and they all went into the ark for to get out of the rain.
The animals went in three by three,
Hurrah! (Hurrah!) Hurrah! (Hurrah!)
The animals went in three by three,
Hurrah! (Hurrah!) Hurrah! (Hurrah!)
The animals went in three by three,
The butterfly, ladybird and the flea
and they all went into the ark for to get out of the rain.
The animals went in four by four,
Hurrah! (Hurrah!) Hurrah! (Hurrah!)
The animals went in four by four,
Hurrah! (Hurrah!) Hurrah! (Hurrah!)
The animals went in four by four,
(by five, by six, by seven and more)
but Noah found room then he closed the door.
There was room for all on the ark for to get out of the rain.
And they all went into the ark for to get out of the rain.
